A gathering on LZ Ike.  Giving the peace sign is Dan "Doc" Hooks, the senior medic.  With the towel around his neck on the right is Charlie Dickey, the Recon Sergeant with the Forward Observer party from A Battery, 1st Battalion 77th Artillery.  (Identifications by Mike Hayes)

This architectural wonder is the Aid Station on LZ Ike.  Notice the wooden planking leading into the entrance - that was intended to keep us out of the mud.  The walls were old 81 mm mortar round boxes, erected with steel support rods.  The "roof" was made of pierced steel planking (known to us as PSP), with the canvas tarp meant to keep out the rain.  This building, along with the Tactical Operations Center (TOC), and others, were part of a "firebase kit" that was kept in the rear area until a new fire base was built. Then the "kit" was flown by Chinook helicopter, and buildings erected.  Hardening of the buildings was done by the troops - filling sandbags.

Dan Bongle, like all the medics, would have known this aid station well.  While they served out in the weeds with the rifle companies, they were actually assigned to Headquarters Company working for the Battalion Surgeon.  Dan was the medic with 3rd Platoon.

Near right: Dan "3/6 Bandaid" Bongle, taken while he was serving with the 3rd Platoon, on the berm at LZ Ike.  Can you tell what state Dan hails from?

Far right:  We need some help. Dan Bongle took this picture of two C 2/5 Cav troopers in the rear base area of Tay Ninh - but does not recall their names.  If you can identify them, please email the Webmaster.
