Summary 1972
American troop strength continued to decline as the Army of the Republic of Vietnam took over more of the combat operations. C 2/5 Cavalry remained part of the 3rd Brigade (Separate), 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), headquartered at Bien Hoa, with the mission of protecting the large air and logistical bases at Bien Hoa, Ton Son Nhut, Saigon, and Long Binh. The year began with the last major battle of the war for Company C, and it suffered its last KIA. When the company ceased operations in March, the members of the company dispersed, and the company guidon went to its new home at Ft. Hood, Texas, in April. With the departure of the 3rd Brigade, all that was left of the 1st Cav in Vietnam was "Task Force Garry Owen", built around the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry. It departed Vietnam in August, 1972.
