Summary - October 1967

The beginning of October 1967 saw C Company pulling out of the eastern portion of Binh Dinh Province and returning with the rest of the battalion to Camp Radcliffe at An Khe. The 2/5 Cav was to assume the security of the Division's base camp and the four field companies left the coastal mountains, paddies and beaches on October 2 for what would turn out to be just over a month in the Central Highlands.

One of the first missions for C Company was patrolling north of Camp Radcliffe in the "Y-Ring", a zone about five to seven kilometers out from the Camp's perimeter. Although the vegetation, the villages and the terrain all were different on the plateau, the operations were familiar: company and platoon patrols, platoon and squad ambushes and combat assaults. 

Leaving the protection of the base camp to the other companies of the battalion, C Company took its turn providing security at various locations along Highway 19, including posting squads at the many small bridges on the road and stationing a couple of platoons at LZ Schueller, a fire support base located alongside the road about eleven kilometers west of An Khe.  The month ended with C Company back at An Khe.  (© 2000, Ken Burington)

October 14

SP4 Henry Fugett, a member of 3^rd Platoon, was killed at 12:45 PM by a gun shot to the chest. An email from Don Jensen:

Henry was in the 3rd Platoon. The company was securing An Khe at the time. Henry had carried my radio for a time before he was KIA. I was on an ARVN base to call in artillery in case the company was hit while on patrol.  It was said he was shot at close range by kids, who escaped. Henry was shot once through the heart and died right away.

SP4 Monte Zierke was wounded and evacuated after stepping on a punji stake.  This happened at 2:15 PM.  Its not known if this happened during the same incident in which SP4 Fugett was killed.

October 15, 1967

2LT Quentin Dennis Zambano, the 2^nd Platoon Leader, was killed when a VC threw a grenade in Binh Dinh Province.  It was the day after his 21^st birthday - he had been in-country two months.  (Sources: Ken Burrington, and C 2/5 Cav Morning Report dtd 15 Oct 1967)
