My father, John O. Hartley, was a lieutenant and platoon leader in 2nd of the 5th, 1st Air Cavalry Division from 1969-1970. I'm not sure of his company or platoon. I was born in Feb. 1970 and I've been told he got back in the Fall of that year. He passed away last Fall (Oct. 2023). He used to tell me stories of his time in the Army, mostly the names of places he had been and people he had known. Growing up I didn't really listen to the details, and usually tuned it out. Now I really wish I had listened. I recently reframed a picture of him in Vietnam talking to another soldier. On the back I found the inscription "March 1970, Moving from FSB Wade (Loc Ninh) to FSB Granite. Talking to Lt. Col. Cody, Division Signal Officer." Does anyone here remember him? I'd appreciate hearing from you if you do. Thanks. |

I am looking for anyone who was involved in firefights at LZ Ike. In particular, I need some help in helping Vietnamese families find the location of graves that were dug there. Please contact me if you remember the battles at Ike. Thanks very much. I was in the 1/12th Cav recon platoon. Call me at 360 627 0918 or email at delta@cattrack6india.com |

Greetings, I am trying to track down some information on my Uncle Harry Rettger III for my cousins. I believe he may have served in C Co, 2nd BN, 5th CAV o/a 1966-67. I found a personnel action sheet online from November 1966. Other names on the sheet are Ralph Powell, Alton Russell, Robert Branch, and George Kenniston. As a former Army Aviator, I am hopeful I can find more information on his time in Vietnam. We both share Air Medals based on the awards I see on his DD214. I know it is a long shot, but if anyone has any information I would be more than grateful. |

I was on a convoy out to FSB mace on Jan 3rd 1972 to tear down the Aid station for 215th Medevac and just before we made the bend on the old royal Hwy - I saw a VC standing by the wood line in a race paddy - we had eye contact and then he burned a full clip from his AK -47 at us - I dove to the truck bed and everyone piled on top - we kept going and all got up laughing ..........when we got to FSB MAce about 15 min later we heard that 2/5 walked into a horse shoe Ambush and 15 guys got wacked - when I was returning to Bien Hoa I saw the medevac choppers and Gunships working the area behind where I saw the VC that shot at me .........I think he was a perimeter guard and I was the first guy shot at in that firefight .......strange how things work out |

I am an amateur historian and college student interested in the history of the 1st Cavalry Division during its service in the Republic of Vietnam. I have been frequenting this site for years now as I soak in any and all Cav Vietnam history. Thank you for publishing and maintaining this site for us younger generations to learn about the sacrifices made. Thank you all for your service and welcome home. |

My brother was a medic in Nam. I was about 7 years old when he went in. The news media showed booms and losses. Mom and dad were worried. Mom made cakes and cookies. I got beat from taking just one spoon of dough. I sat on Doc. Suzuki 120 black motorcycle and day dreamed of what he was doing and hoped he was well. When he made it home, he was totally different yet the same. Sleeping with the pillow over his head I wondered why. He said...it was noisy out there sometimes and if we can find a time to sleep...we found anyway to make it quieter. I am glad for those who made it home. I am sad for those who did not. |

It is Memorial Day 2021. I wish to so much thank those who developed and maintain this site for your contribution to the personal history of the Vietnam War and to thank all the soldiers for your service and sacrifice. My brother was Sargent Michael J. Kotulla and his sacrifice for his country on April 12, 1967 is actually documented in your records of action. I believe he was in D Company, but I am sure the history of his service in Vietnam from the time he arrived in January 1967 through April is similar to the records of C Company. I very much appreciate the details provided that help me understand what he experienced in Vietnam. |
